Στα μέσα του 19ου αιώνα, όταν ο κόμης EARL GREY, Υπουργός Εξωτερικών της Αγγλίας, πρόσθεσε στο τσάϊ του περγαμόντο, μάλλον δεν φανταζόταν ότι θα έδινε το όνομα του σ΄ένα από τα πιό αγαπητά μίγματα τσαγιού. Σύμφωνα με τη μία από τις πλέον διαδεδομένες,στην Αγγλία, εκδοχές το Περγαμόντο το γνώρισε στην Κέρκυρα η οποία τότε ήταν υπό την "προστασία" της Αγγλίας.
